What Do Coaches Do?

People often asked me what do I as a Business and Executive Coach do. Do I teach people, motivate people and counsel people?  As a coach, what make me able to help people that are more experienced than me?  Do I only cover soft skills and not focus on hard skills?  Why should anyone pay me to coach them?  Can people do self-coaching?'

The answer to the above questions is simply this: a coach does one and only thing: solve problems. We help our customers solve their problems.

Note that we don't help people solve the symptoms of their problems, which is what most consultants do. For example, if your company's sales is down, consultants and trainers would tell you to train your salespeople, make your products and services more attractive and so on.

As a coach I go to the root of the problem, which could be simply your company is serving the wrong market and your sales compensation scheme is not attracting more sales.

How do we go to the root of your problem?  By asking questions.  We also do 'imagine what if' scenarios. Most importantly, we go to the root of the problem by doing numbers. That's right, we do calculations on what will happen if you solve your problem in a certain way.

At the end of the day, numbers will not lie. Our clients will pick the solution based on not what they like but how the numbers work out to be.

Let's take a case study. ABC Company wants to increase its sales but thinks that the solution lies in lowering its prices. So we do a computation on what will happen to its sales when the price is lower, and we test the solution by gong to the real market and offering lower prices to existing customers. If the response is good, we compute what will happen to the profits with a lower price.

On the other hand, we challenge our clients to adopt other solutions that solve the root of the problem. The root of the problem could lies in focusing on a bigger market. So we get our client to offer to a big market and see what happens. We compute the risk-reward ratios, do a probability analysis and compute the bottom-line. Only when the bottomline is attractive will we adopt the solution.

In essence, what a coach does is to solve the root of problems. We do that by going to the real situation and use numbers to help us select the right solution.

3 Steps in Psychology

Psychological Selling

Customers have certain psychology and if we could understand their psychology and go along with them, they will buy from us automatically.
Psychological Selling is connecting with people's hearts and get into his inner world with the purpose of solving his problem.  It is like the doctor who always do consultation before he dispenses any solution (medicine) to the patient. And of course the doctor must connect with the customer or the customer will not share openly with the doctor. Passive Income as an Employee

We all know that to achieve financial freedom, we need to not work for money and let money work for us. This means we must have income when we are not working, or commonly known as passive income.
Unfortunately, most people never think that they can have passive income, for they think passive income is only for investors and business owners, especially people in Network Marketing or MLM.

Today I shall teach everyone how you too can have passive income, even though you are just an employee and hold no investments and not doing network marketing business. That's right, you hold on to your full time salaried job and get passive income.

Passive income, according to the dictionary, is income you earn when you are not actively working or working passively. Notice the key word 'working'. That means you earn passive income when you work, just that you are not working actively. According to research, there are 3 levels of passive income:
  • At the highest level of passive income, you simply do things one time and get paid many times over, over many years. Like people who earn royalties and people who hire someone to work for them
  • At the middle level of passive income, you work more than one time to get paid, but the number of times you get paid is always more than the number of times you work. Like repeat business, you get the customer one time and need to service them to get paid many times over
  • At the lowest level of passive income, you simply have to work to get paid, but you put in lesser hours than before and still get paid the same, or you put in same hours but get paid more. A good example is when you are being more productive and you get to earn more for lesser work.
There are 7 ways that you can earn passive income as an employee:
  1. Automation and Tools. This includes the use of hardware and software, where you automate a process or increase your output with tools
  2. Higher Skill. When you are more skilled, you can do more with less. Skills here include education, work experience and knowledge
  3. Higher Motivation. When you operate at a higher level of motivation, your work becomes easier. Morale and inspiration will just come in naturally and you'll realize that work is a breeze. The more you enjoy your work, the more output you produce and you will achieve a rising level of passive income
  4. Getting Work Done by Other People. When you lead, manage and inspire people, you get work done by other people and get paid for work done by them.  Many leaders and managers are doing that every day. Of course the better you are at leading and managing people, the higher is your passive income
  5. Leverage on Experts and Other People. When you tap into consultants and trainers, you'll achieve a high level of output without much work, leading to high levels of passive income. Collaboration with other people also gives you similar outcome
  6. New Ways of Doing Things. Like now we use social media to connect with people, we can even make money from social media. This type of passive income is easily available to all
  7. Creativity and Innovation. The world's food is now produced by just 3% of the world's population. This is largely due to creativity and innovation, where we can now produce more food with lesser land and labour. Many farmers are enjoying high levels of passive income without realizing
I can go on and on, but making passive income is free for all, as long as we take advantage of it. We can make passive income not just from investments and businesses, but from our employment.

Whether you are self-employed or employee, as long as you increase your productivity, you systemize your work, you innovate and create value, you use automation and tools, and you work well with other people, you will be earning passive income. For you now work less than before and still earn the same. Of course the next level is to increase your percentage of passive income.

The ultimate level of passive income is when you simply don't need to work at all and earn all the money. This can be achieved even when you don't invest a single cent, like you own a network marketing business.

What's Wrong with Young People Being a Uber Full-time Driver?

(You can watch the short 3-minute video on this at here)
TODAY news reported that more and more young people below the age of 30 are now driving Uber and Grab full time.  They seem happy with it and many said that they will continue driving them as long as possible.

So sad. There's nothing wrong with driving a cab but young people are supposed to be in high demand and driving Uber or Grab should be the last resort and not the first choice.

It is like you are young and you can have a very active life but you are extremely happy staying at home all the time. There is nothing wrong except that you are missing out on the good things in life.

You see when you drive Uber or Grab you are missing out many things as compared with having your own career or business. The 10 things you are missing are:
  1. No CPF, thus no savings for your old age and for your house
  2. No holidays, no public holidays and no weekends to enjoy
  3. No colleagues and business partners thus little chance to learn from colleagues and work counterparts
  4. No skills other than on the road skills, talking with people on a short term basis, and, skills on picking up passengers
  5. No chance to try out more challenging tasks like working overseas, running your own business and taking on more responsibilities other than driving on the road
  6. No career development opportunities other than driving more and more hours on the road, driving more upmarket cars and picking up more upmarket passengers
  7. No chance to be financially intelligent as there is little chance to save more than a thousand dollars a month
  8. No team building skills as the only team you build are with Uber and Grab fellow drivers and their support staff
  9. No writing skills to be developed other than texting with passengers on where to pick them up
  10. No public speaking skills to be developed as you are always talking to passengers inside a car and little chance to talk outside
I could go on and on but the point is there is nothing wrong with driving a cab, Uber or Grab as long as you have no other opportunities. But if you are young, below 30, and have lots of opportunities before you and you choose to shut off all of them to be in the solace of a car driving 10 hours a day earning 2 to 3.5 thousands a month, I want you to think twice.  You may hate me for telling you this but I will still tell you this: there is something wrong when more and more young people drive Uber and Grab full time. (You can watch the short 3-minute video on this at here)
